Warfarin Drug profile Generic name: Warfarin Trade names: Coumadin, Jantoven Drug class: vitamin K antagonist (Medicinenet.com, 2013) Formulations: Tablets: 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg. Powder for Injection: 5 mg/vial (Medicinenet.com, 2013) Indications: Warfarin is primarily used for treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism, and to reduce risk of pulmonary embolism. Warfarin may also be used to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation or artificial heart valves. Contraindications: Warfarin is not recommended for use amongst pregnant women, unless they have a high risk of thromboembolism. Patients with recent CNS or traumatic surgery should also avoid use of warfarin, along with those that have bleeding or haemorrhagic tendencies. (Medicinenet.com, 2013) Adverse effects: Warfarin can commonly cause the following adverse effects: Nausea, loss of appetite, or stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin (Medicinenet, 2013). Warfarin is also potentially fatal as it can cause a major haemorrhage. Interactions: Drugs that commonly interact with warfarin include: capecitabine, imatinib, mifepristone, Aspirin, aspirin-like drugs (salicylates), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen,celecoxib). These drugs typically alter Warfarinââ¬â¢s anticoagulant effects, resulting in bleeding problems.
